Act 2, Scene 1-3 Reading Response Questions

Answer the following three questions. (e-mail me if you need any clarifications.)

1. Do you believe in love at first sight? Explain why or why not.

2. Summarize scenes 1, 2, and 3 of Act 2. For each scene, pretend that you are one of the characters in that scene and you are sending a text-message on your cell phone to another character about what just happened in the scene. You want to get your message out quickly, so you need to keep it short. Limit yourself to 25 words FOR EACH MESSAGE and don't be afraid to use short hand or abbreviations. The challenge will be for you to accurately summarize the action and to stay in character while staying within the limit. You need a total of three (3) text messages - one per scene.

EXAMPLE: Scene 1 - Mercutio to Romeo (I could have also chosen to be Romeo or Benvolio)

Where r u?? in bed? Ignoring us? B said you were over a wall. I called - no answer. Tired. going to bed. C U 2morrow?

3. The importance of a person's name comes into question in scene 2 when Juliet asks "What’s in a name?" (line 46). She and Romeo both wish, of course, that his last name were not Montague. Also, earlier in scene 1, Mercutio calls Romeo all sorts of different names.

How important do you think names are? How much of one's identity is linked to one's name - either first name, last name. or both? How about nicknames?

I do not believe in love at first sight. I believe in attraction at first sight. When you see someone you can be attracted to them but when you get to know them they could be the most annoying person in the world.

Scene one: Yo romeo wanted juliet badly so he decided to finaly do sumtin bout it so he went to her house and climber da wall

Scene two: Yo Benvolio i am rite outside da capudumbs house and romeo and juliet be chatin. i nvr new romeo was so romantic.

Scene three: Romeo wants to mary juliet! omg the are so dang young. the frair said he would do it to dag young.

I do not think that names are to important. It does not matter what somebodys name is. Not much of your identity is linked to your name. Your first name could sound like a girls name but you could be a man. Nick names could repersent your self. Sasha nicked names me bubbles in bowling because i blow bubbles a lot.

No ,because you dont know a person until youve talked to the person and see if you have similar intrests.

Scene 1:Romeo was like i like her so much I gots to go talk to her. So he goes scales a wall.

scene 2 :"yo romeo where u at""here.""u like the sun""yea i be""and the moon""yuppp""U in puberty""yea"

Scene 3:ROmeo want to marry julet go talk to the fria." The fria be like yea ill marry ya."

Someones name tell who thay sre and waht there past is.There first name can tell who there grandparents like in my freinds family where your name is the is the same your grandfather or grandmother.Your nickname can tell a little bit about u. like dilans nickname bubbles cause he blows bubbles.

yea
u want to get maried?
ya
yay!
Scene 3 romeo to lawrence
u think it good to be married now?
yea'
can u marry me to jewls?
if u want me 2
yay!

3. a persons identity is very much so conected to a persons name. things like bank account, social secuitys number and things like that. a name is no way related to a
persons veiws on life or personality.

c) (Lawrence to Romeo) it is a nice day. where Have u been? Do u love ur enmey? don't act to fast.

3. Names are extreamily important. They are important because they help us didtinguish ones self from other people. Without names, the world would fall into caos. Nick names are useful because they make a long name into a short one.

1. I don’t believe in love at first site because it is a physical attraction. Love is someone you have known, trust and can tell your secrets without fear of criticism. Love usually takes time to develop and trust has to be earned.
2. Act 2 Scene1
Juliet to Romeo
Ur name is my enemy but my luv-my rose with thorns?
Romeo to Juliet
U r my night and day and no name can keep us apart-I luv u?
Scene 2
Friar Lawrence to Romeo
Were u sleeping with Rosaline all night?
Romeo to Friar Lawrence
I luv Juliet Capulet. Marry us tonight?
Friar Lawrence to Romeo
Sure Ill do the vows. Hope marriage ends feud.
Scene 3
Romeo to Mercutio and Benvolio
Im a luver not a fighter. I was not attended to my friends bc my need was great?
Romeo to Nurse
Tell Juliet confess to Friar Lawrence this evening? Will e married by him?
Friar Lawrence to Romeo
Ill b ur assistant. May this marriage turn hate to luv in ur families?
3. Names tell which family you belong to and which person identified as in the family. Ones first and last names could identify a person’s culture and heritage. A nickname is a diminutive form of a pet name for a person.

1) I believe in love at first sight sometimes. Sometimes, love at first sight is right, and it works out. I think that it is ok for a person to find love when they first look at someone. At other times, love at first sight doesn't work. When a person sees another person, and thinks that they love him/her, it sometimes will, and sometimes won't work.

2) Text Message- act 2, scene 1 Benvolio -> Mercutio

wow can u believe it??! romeo climbed this huge wall just to get 2 juliet!

Act 2, scene 2 Juliet -> Romeo

what time should u come 2morw? cya l8r

Act 2, scene 3
Romeo -> Friar Lawrence

could me and juliet get married 2morrow?! keep it a secret!!!!!

3) I think that names are pretty important. Sometimes you can tell, by the last name where a person is from, or what nationality they are. With nicknames, sometimes it is hard to tell, because often, the nicknames are random, and only a few people know what they mean.

1. I don't believe in love in first site because there is absolutely no reputable source or personal experience that would lead me to conclude this.

Absolutely none.

2. Mercutio: "OMFG, Romeo is crzy to leap the wll. Cme on, Romeo. I jst want to read tis."

Romeo and Juliet: "I c u, julet. U r so butiful"
"Yep"
"I lve ur voice."

Friar Lawrence and Romeo: "God forgive ur sin. Wr u wit rosey?"
"im over her"
"Good. Wr hve u ben?"
"I have been feasting with mine enemy"
"huh?"

3. In most past societies, a last name will be a symbol of that person's worth. Fortunately, in today's world, a last name doesn't need much, since there will be atleast seven hundred people who share even the most peculiar names. I know there are twelve thousand or so Colin Bos.

First names reveal even less. The most creative names are shared by the thousands. People have come to expect strange names; in this world, who can tell the difference between a Jashoonie and an Alex?

Nicknames reveal a little more, atleast. A person with the nickname of "Pope liker" can be relied on to like either the Catholic holy figure in Rome or the author of "The Duncaid". Nicknames can also be nonsense too, though.

Then again, names can have a small function if linked to someone of actual historical worth. Someone named Adolf is going to be automatically linked to Adolf Hitler. A name can give away nationality. But that doesn't reveal an actual character. Also, I can learn a lot more about someone's ethnicity by just looking at them (with, of course, the power of assumption).

We also have to take into account that the person who named Adolf Adolf (poor Adolf) may be referencing the world leader (I think you would have to have lived in a cave for quite a few decades to not). In that case, we could assume something about the child.

Another point- names can be changed. If someone was named James Turner, and decided to change his name to Joseph Spencer, that can show that James (or Joseph) either likes the name Joe or hates the name James.

Here is my conclusion- there is no one answer to this. For every example of a name being useful, there are thousands of instances where names had no practical application. There has to be a compromise- names matter, but in this modern world, not much.

1.) I don't believe in love at first sight. People look at someone and imagine a personality. The personality can seem like a good one but then you meet the person in real life and they're usually very different. Sometimes it's that they're more laid-back than you're used to. Or they're too uptight. They can be too depressing of a person; or too happy. Whether it's one of those or anything else. The person most likely has something you would be surprized to find out. Sometimes it's a good thing, but you're not in love until you find these things out. After you see someone, you can be attracted but I don't believe you can actually fall in love at first sight.

2.) Scene 1 Benvolio to Mercutio: Where the heck is r cuzn romeo? Ill call him lik a spirit or sumthin. What? This wont make him mad. I'm just sayin "Rosaline."

Scene 2 Juliet to Romeo: Change ur name! We can b 2gethr if you do. Or just say you luv me n ill change MY name. Crud! This was sent?!

Scene 3 Friar lawrence to Romeo: Y do u wana get married? Didn't u just love Rosaline? Why the sudden change? Fine, but don't rush urself, u can make a huge mistake.

3.) I don't think that names are too important but someone HAS to have any type of name so that people just don't say "hey, you!" Nicknames are also names and I don't think that they are too important either. Though, people do use nicknames as signs of affection so in a way they are important but without them, there are still many ways to tell someone how much you like/dislike them.

I don't believe in love at first sight. Thinking you know everything about someone in one glance is ridiculous. You can't just love someone's looks and then say you want to get married. The person you think you love can be a real-life DR. No and you wouldn't know because you summarized he or she in seconds.
Scene 1
Benvolio: Romeo, where were u tonite? Were u with Rosaline? Mercutio and I couldn't find u. Txt me later about it.
Scene 2
Benvolio: Dude, where r u? U must b near the orchard wall. R u talking with somebody? Who? Are you with someone from the party?

Scene 3
Benvolio: WHERE ARE U? What are u doing? Are u sick? Did the Capulets stop you? Do u want to get married or something? COME HOME!!!
Names mean alot about a person. It reflects who they're related to, what they're parents thought of when they first saw you, and what you think about you're name. My fisrt name is Allison, for example, but for at least 4 years I've only been known as Ally. I have a penpal that thinks my actual name is Ally. A name, for me, defines that you are of a certain family, but not necessarily who you are. Romeo doesn't hate Juliet, yet their families hate each other. This is different for nicknames. A nickname is a almost always created by the person who is going to be named it, and that embodies what the person is.

1. No I do not belive in love at first sight if you catagorize love as an atrraction to ones personality. Love at first sight is just a dramatization of a force of attraction based on someones looks.

2.

scene one, benvolio

Hey Romeo, where r u? We r lookin for you! There's no way you got over dat wall! I'm tired I'm heading home, better C u tommorow.

scene 2

Yo I just over heard a capulet say they like me! We talked for awhile and i think we gettin married! If only I wasnt a montague...w/e i doin it anyway....

scene 3

yo the father said he marry me and juilet, dis is great. I scolded me for loving Roseline before though...guess he didnt get the memo...

4. Someones first name is theres to make, it can bring history if they want it to, someones last name is the history of the man and the mans family, someones nickname is how other people think of him...

I believe in love at first sight, because you could look at someone for the first time, and see what they were doing, wearing, or saying, and realize that that person is the match for you.

Scene 1 - Benvolio to Romeo: We g2g - we're not gonna wait for you - your fault you ran away - call me
Scene 2 - Romeo to Benvolio: I'm in love! Don't wait for me, I'm meeting someone. I won't see you until tomorrow afternoon, I've g2g to church in the am
Scene 3 - Friar Lawrence to Alter Server: Come early this morning - special service - set up alter for marriage ceremony

A name is not always that important, but it sometimes is. Names can be, and usually are linked to one's ethnic background. Nicknames are usually made to represent a person's behavior, history or appearance, such as calling a short person "shorty." In the story of Romeo and Juliet, the last names Capulet and Montague have been carried down for many generations through their never-ending feud. In Romeo and Juliet's generation, it means that they are part of the ongoing violence (even if they're really not), and that one Capulet and one Montague could never be in love. This is because the two families have been arguing for so long that it would seem wrong to have them make ammends.

1. I don't believe in love at first sight. I think that if you love somebody without even talking, than it can only be a physical attraction, not a deep mental link as we believe love is.

2. SCENE 1: New Message! From: Row_Me_Owe
Dude, I hath totally described mine love to Benvolio and Mercutio. It is a true, pure love, as I told them. g2g, ttyl.
SCENE 2: New Message! From: Jewl_E_At
Romeo like, came towards mine window and calleth to me from, like, below. I am meeting him at nine next morrow.
Scene 3: New Message! From: Fry_Our_Lore_Rents
Confounded porta-phone technology. I hath barely a signal. I was asked to marry enemy lovers Juliet and Romeo. I know not what to do!

3. Names are very important. Your name represents your family. If you are born into the Cruise family, you are the child of a famous actor. You are rich, and you will grow up living high on the hog. If you are from, say, the Jibbers, a poor family barely surviving off of what your parents can scrounge, chances are your childhood and your education may not be the best, and you won't be an heir to a large family estate or anything. In terms of nicknames, they tend to be obscure references to somethng that happened in the past. They don't matter wuite so much. For example, a counselor at my camp is nicknamed 'Lefty'. She is right handed. She is called lefty, though, because one time while taking a group rock climbing, she put on two left rock climbing shoes and she didn't realize until she was halfway up the cliff face. Her real name is Emily, but ever since she has been Lefty.

1. I believe in love at first sight. I believe that it is possible to know that the person standing in front of you is someone you want to be with even at first glance.
2. Text A-(Benvolio to Romeo) where are you Romeo we have been looking for you for ever. You have better not be with that girl from last night.
Text B-(Romeo to Juliet) I’m outside. I could not stay away. I don’t want our names to matter or keep us away from each other. Do you agree?
Text C-(Romeo to Friar Lawrence) I am in love with Juliet. I do not care of her name or what our parents will think or how they will respond.
3. I think that names are very important. Your name defines who you are and who your family is. Both of these statements are important to know about someone when you first meet them. Having said this is I don’t agree with Romeo and Juliet’s thought that names don’t matter. Nicknames are usually based off ones behavior or something they do. Nicknames also play a big role in the personality and actions of the person

I believe in the idea of love at first sight. I mean, who's to say you can't look at someone and believe that you are in love with them. THough the love might be purely superficial, for that person, it's still love and if they can tell that from looking at the person, then that is their point of view.

Mercutio to Benvolio: hey, ro sill n bed?omg, he should just deal. wut with the wall? g2g, c u l8r.

Romeo to Juliet: i luv u 4eva. i wish i werent a M. i will c u tomorrow @ 9 luv. who wuz that b4?

Romeo to Friar Lawrence: O pleez wont u marry me + juliet. My luv for R does not compare wit how i feel 4 J. I luv her, not R. Dont u understand?

THe only thing that one can tell from a aname is their past and their heritage. Names can be changed to one's liking so they do not always resemble the person. I nick name is a reflectio of some aspect of one's self often given by a friend or multiple friends so that can reflect on their personality or physical traits. Other then that a name is jsut something given to you at birth, and nothing more.

No. I do not believe in love at first sight. I don't believe that you can love someone that you have just seen for the first time. I believe that you have to get to know someone before you love them. You can be attracted to someone at first sight but you cannot love them at first sight.
Mercutio, my cousin Romeo hopped into Capulets lawn. He declared his love for Juliet and was told someone 'll come to ask if he'd marry her.
Mercutio, Friar came to Romeo's house. Convinces Friar that he loves Juliet not Rosaline. Friar agrees to marry them hoping it'll end the family fued.
Prince, Romeo didn't come home last night, abondoning Mercutio and I. Tybolt challenged Romeo to a duel. Nurse comes. They will be married at noon.
At this time names were very important. In these days family was a big thing and you were known by what your last name was. Name can also lead to fights like Montague and Capulet for emample. A lot of someones identity is linked to their name. Nicknames are also important because in these days it tells a lot about the person.

I believe in love at first sight. For some cheap people, there definately is love at first sight, or at least what they think is love at first sight. However, I'm sure people have seen eachother and fallen in love almost instantly.

Romeo, were u at? Me and B be lookin fo you. Hit me back.

M, u wouldn't believe dis! Juliet is a bombshell! Shes perfect!

Hey M and B, i think dis Priest gon' marry us! Iss purfict! It might even end da fued b/t da fams!

I don't believe in the importance of names in America. Sometimes, you are named after a family member, which is a part of you and you identity, but the first name doesn't really have an importance. Nicknames can sometimes have something to do with your character, but they can also just be easier ways to say your name. In other cultures, like most tribal indian cultures, for example, names do have to do you with you. You are named for your expectation in life and for you personality.

1. I don’t believe in love at fist sight because you need to get to know someone before you love them to make sure you really want to be with that person.

2. Scene 1- Romeo to Mercutio
Hey! I wanted to see Juliet after the feast. I climbed a wall. U and B called 4 me. Juliet and I talked a lot.

Scene 2- Benvolio to Mercrutio
Hi! OMG Romeo and Juliet are going to get married. Friar Lawrence will be marrying them and he hopes the feud will end 4 ever.

Scene 3- Mercrutio to Romeo
Wazzzz up! B and I wondered what happened to u last night. B told me that u didn’t go home. Tybalt and u r dueling.

3. Last names come from someone’s background. Someone’s nickname expresses what that person acts like, looks like, and many other things.

1. I don't think love at first sight is realistic. If one sees a really pretty person and immedietly falls in love with them, it is not fair, because that person could be really mean or be a criminal.
2. AS ROMEO
i)omg so i fell in love with juliet. i went to meet her and we confessed our love to each other. it was really great.
ii)i talked to Friar Lawrence about marrying juliet and i. he said yes. he also said it would fix our problems with our families.
iii) i got in a fight with benvolio and mercutio over rosalynn. they're being jerks.
3. Names aren't important. What is important is their love. If they really care about each other, then their family names shouldn't be involved at all. A person can't really control their love, especially when fate is involved. Making the family names an interfereance, makes their love stronger, and their will to fight fate stronger, making the importance of their family na,es stronger.

I do not believe in love at first sight. I do believe in lust at first sight. Love is not only based on physical attraction which is the feeling you get when you see someone good looking, love is more based on an emotional aspect. I would say what Romeo and Juliet first felt was lust because it was only physical attraction seeing as they did not know anything about each other.

Text Messages:
Scene 1 - Benvolio to Mercutio

Where is R? My lord he is love sick. I can't find him so I'm going home. Maybe he's there.

Scene 2 - Juliet to Romeo

I love you. I wish u weren't a Montague, you would be the same w/out the name. We should marry and soon.

Scene 3 - Friar Lawrence to Romeo

I thought u loved Rosaline. I will marry you and your love but I must warn you early marriages are not good marriages.

Names are used as an identification. A first name is a way to tell you apart from someone else and a last name associates you with someone. A first name is not as important as a last name because a last name links you to something. A nickname can be used to identify you by one of your traits which I think is the most important because it tells you something about the person in most cases, or depending on who calls you what you can see how they feel about their connection to you. Most of a person's identity is linked with their nickname but a last name helps to link them to other people so they are the both important because of the information they give about the person. I do not believe a name defines a person, because first names tell you nothing, last names can associate you to people you are not like, and nicknames can be completely comical so a person is defined more by actions than their name.

1. I do not believe in love at first sight because to really love someone you have to get to know that person.
2.
Scene 1- (Romeo to Benvolio) i hav gone. do not folow. i am nt in bed. goodnite.
Scene 2- (Nurse to Juliet) Juliet com insid now. stop watever ur doing on the balcony. bed time.
Scene 3- (Romeo to Juliet) it is don. friar lawrenc wil do it. we wil marry. this wil end th feud
3. Names are a very important thing in our world and Romeo and Juliet's world. Last names are basically who you are and everywhere you go you will be known by your last name. In the book last names are more important because they link you to a certain group of people and put you against another group of people. Of course you cannot tell anything about anyone by their last name or their first name. Nicknames are not as important because you can change back to your real name or to another one anytime you want.

I dont beleive in love at first sight, becuase you may hate the person once you talk to them, or they may be really stupid. There is attraction at first sight.

In scene one, Romeo ditches Mercutio and Benvolio and climbs Juliets wall. Mercutio and Benvolio look for him but give up.
In scene two, Romeo is in the garden after he climbs the wall and he hears juliet talk about how she loves him. he tells her he is there and they talk about getting married and their love for each other.
In scene three, romeo goes to friar lawrence and asks to be married to juliet. The friar says "ok" because he wants the fighting between the familys to end.

I dont think names are inportant because when you are named your parents know nothing about you. They could name you Einstein and you could end up being stupid. A nickname represents yourself more because people have seen your traits and characteristics when they give it to you.
