One similarity between Rebel Without a Cause and Catcher in the Rye is that both characters seem affluent. Holden goes to a pretentious boarding school, and Jim moves frequently. That brings up another similarity; both protagonists move because of their poor behavior.

There are many differences, however. Rebel Without a Cause is set in California, while Catcher in the Rye is set in New York. Another difference is that Jim is more friendly and less judgemental than Holden.

This movie helps us understand the book because Holden is essentially a "Rebel Without a Cause". Holden is very antagonistic (but he is the protagonist) and is usually a Rebel Without a Cause, just like Jim is at the start of the movie.

There are many similarties between catcher in the rye and a rebel without a cause. One is that they are both about the pressures on teenages. Another similar thing is that they are in the same time period. There are however some major differences. One is that they are pressured about different things. Another is how wealthy they are. Their reactions would be different compaired on how much they owned ect.

A Rebel without a cause helps us understand catcher in the rye by showing another teenagers view. it helps understand reactions that holden may give later on in the book.

Holden and Jim both get into trouble. Holden likes Jane and Jim likes Judy. Buzz reminds me of Stradlater because they are both popular and they act similar. Ackley and Plato both hang around with Holden and Jim. They have the same personallity. Holden and Jim get into different kinds of trouble. For example, Holden doesn't do his work and isn't very responsible. Jim gets into physical fights with others and does crazy things like trying to stop before going over the edge of the cliff.

2) They both take place at school and the stories are similar.

1)It's two "young rebels" and they have both problems with their lives.
2)They're diffrent beacuse it seems like Jim are a little more social then Holden, beacuse Jim has friends, girlfriend etc. Holden is more reserved.
I think that Jim has bigger problems than Holden. Jim has his mom and dad, the gang and he feel guilty for buzzes death. Holden is expelld from school but i haven't come so far in "The Cather in the Rye" yet.

The two charcters Jim and Buzz in Rebel Without A Cause are similar to Holden and Stradlater respectively in Catcher In The Rye. Jim and Holden are both trying to protect the girl from the mean jock which are Buzz and Stradlater. Jim and holden both seem to be neglected by their parents. The main difference is the teenagers in Rebel Without A Cause and Catcher In The Rye is that, the teenagers don’t go th jail in Catcher In The Rye. Another difference is that all the teenagers in Catcher In The Rye live at schoolin a dormatory away from home and the teenager in Rebel Without A Cause live at home with their parents. I think the film Rebel Without A Cause show us that teenagers are very similar in that they are all searching for their place in society and that the problems are similar to the teenagers in the book.

1. The characters in the movie Rebel Without a Cause are similar to the ones in The Catcher and the Rye. Jim acts as Holden, in Catcher and the Rye, where as Buzz acts as Stradlater. It is like they are based off of each other. The characters in the film are different because they are in a different situation. In the Catcher and the Rye the beginning of the book is set a boarding school named Pencey, but here, it is set in a public school that is not boarding. There is a gang in Rebel Without a Cause, and in Pencey there is not a gang that stands out.

2. This movie helps us to understand the book in many ways. One way is to see everyone in person, helps to imagine the characters at Pencey. Another way is to watch something being done, rather than read it. This makes a difference because sometimes watching something helps to understand it better.

Holden is alot like Jim. They both beat up people when they get in sticky situations, and it doesn't serve them well. They also both don't listen to their parents. Holden's parents seem alot like Jim's. They both don't know what to do with Jim/Holden and keep moving, in Jim's case, or switching schools, in Holden's. Both are taken out of environments that the parents deem innapropriate(However, it is not clear that Holden got taken or kicked out of every school, but his parents show a level of fustration in the process and don't seek Holden in one place or another. Although this might be difficult, it hasn't been tried.).

In Catcher in the Rye,all Holden ever does is lie and do the wrong thing at the wrong time. In a Rebel Without a Cause, Jim doesn't usually try to do the right thing, but he finally tries to. He goes to the police station and tries to turn himself in as a person involved in the death of Buzz. Although they don't believe him, this is where Jim and Holden part ways. Holden doesn't know how to do the right thing, so he usually doesn't. But Jim, he at times knows whatthe right thng to do is and does it. Another difference betweem the two of them is that their fights are different. Holden goes to a Prep school and lies to so-called phonies so they think he's cool, Jim goes to the local high school and tries to stab kids when they call him a chicken. Holden worries that his friend is going out with a guy who's way too slick and punches his eyeballs out for that reason, and Jim, well,Jim stabs kids for being called a chicken. Holden cares for his friends, JIm cares for himself.
Through Jim, we can get a look inside Holden. Holden has that same rebel spirit, leaving early form school, flunking out of nearly every class. Jim and Holden are very much alike, but are in very different environments, but have the same problem. Jim wants support from his father against his mother, and Holden needs help wherever he can get it

I believe that in Rebel Without a cause Jim is a lot like Holden in Catcher In The Rye because Jim is a rebel and you could definately consider Holden a rebel too. I think the themes of these two stories could be called similar because they are both about a guy who is struggling with this preiod in his life and is trying to get through it any way he can.
These two stories could be considered different because in Rebel Without a Cause Buzz and his friends are after Jim which makes it harder for him to get through this bad time and in Catcher in The Rye no person would be considered the "bad guy". Another differnece is that even though both thse stories are about a boy trying to get through a hard time, Rebel without a cause could definately be considered more hard core and intense with the game they play and with Jim fighting with his parents.
I believe that Rebel without a cause definately helps us understand Catcher In The Rye. This helps us because it is another example of a teenager struggling to become an adult, who struggles with his parents (In Holdens case his roomates), and struggles in the atmosphere around him.

2 simularities between Rebel without a cause and catcher in the rye is that they both deal with teen angst, and they both deal with a lone ranger character.

2 differances is that rebel without a cause seems to be a story to entertain, but catcher in the rye really is a deep thinker, rebel without a cause is not. Also Rebel without a cause is about jim and the people around him, catcher in the rye is just about holden mostly, and his problems

the movie lets us understand the book in that it shows us the world of then in motion and also how people around that world interact, catcher in the rye doesnt let us in on other people, or technoligy, the movie does...

1. a. A troubled boy from a wealthy family goes through life without finding a real place anywhere.
b. The boy in both the book and the film finds he loves a girl who is with a completely different group.
c. Holden is dropping out of schools, Jim is moving from town to town.
d. Jim is much more aware than Holden, where as Holden is just plain naive.

2. You can visualize what is happening if you change just a few details.

The characters in CotR and Rw/oC are alike because they have emotional problems. Holden has problems with school. Jim's parents move all the time, Judy's dad doesn't show her emotions. Lastly Jane's step-father has drinking problems and is very irresponsible.
The characters are also different though. The CotR caracters have more detailed problems and the Rw/oC characters' problems are more vague and probably harder to solve.
I do not think the movie helps me understand the book at all. The plots are different and it is hard to understand a book by another movie

In both the book and the film the two main characters have a fight about a girl. In both the fight seems not to be about a girl but subconsciously it is. The difference between the two fights is that one is with switchblades and the other is a less serious fight. In both the main character does not like his parents and is away of home most of the time. The main characters are not understood in both and are rebellious. Some differences are the ages of the characters and the maturity. I think that the movie helps a lot to understand Holden. You get to see the life of them and see how it would be like for Holden.

One of the things that the two have in common is the fact that the two seem to have similar attitudes to life in general. They both seem to have a cynical attitude and when they aren't cynical they are kidding around, not taking anything seriously. Also they both tend to move around alot. Another thing that the two have in common is the fact that they both care about a girl. Jim cares about Judy and Holden cares about Jane. They both start with a J!!!!!!
Two things that are different are 1, Jim has a few friends like Judy and Plato but Holden doesn't seem to have anyone close. Another thing that makes them different is even though Jim and Holden both move around alot, they move for different reasons. Holden moves around because he has been kicked out but Jim moves around because his motherforces them too because she's running away from their past.

Rebel Without A Cause, doesn't really help us understand Catcher In The Rye, mostly because we unerstand Jim's motives for what he does but i can't seem to place why Holden acts the way he does.

some of the situations are the similar in the book and movie. One situation that is similar is that both Holden and Jim ran away. Holden ran away from school and Jim from home. another way that they are similar is Holden doesnt have a whole lot of friends and neither does Jim. One way that they are different is that in rebel without a cause the students dont go to a bording school and they do in catcher in the rye. Another way that they are different is that the kids in Rebel Without a Cause are much more dangerous. THey fought with knives and the chickie game.

One way that Rebel with out a cause helps us understand the book is that we have a look at two different rebels.

In rebel without a cause, Jim gets into a lot of trouble, as does Holden in The catcher in The Rye. Holden has to keep switching schools and Jim has to keep moving, because of their actions. Also their parents don’t seem to understand either of them. It is different in the fact that Holden gets kicked out of schools, and Jim keeps moving. Also Jim takes bigger risks then Holden. In the chicky run he risks his life where as Holden only gets into a fist fight. Rebel without a cause helps me see what life was like for teens in the 1950’s.

Holden and Jim are very similar and very different at the same time. They are both rebels. They are both misunderstood. They both like a girl that is dating someone that’s better than them. They both also don’t have a good relationship with their parents. Their differences are that “A Rebel without a Cause” takes place somewhere in California, whereas The Catcher in the Rye takes place somewhere in New York. Jim ends up getting his girl, whereas so far, Holden has no contact with Jane. The movie helps us understand the book by giving us a different example of a rebel and his life, and especially how he deals with being a rebel and its consequences.

I think that the characters in The Catcher in The Rye and the characters in Rebel Without a Cause are very much alike. I think that Holden and Jim are both "rebels.” I think that these two are alike because, both of them are not that close to their parents. I think that Ackley and Plato are alike because they are both good friends with the main character’s Jim and Holden. It also seems as if Buzz and Stardlater are alike. I think this because, they are both vain in a way. For example, how Stradleter is always in the mirror looking at himself and grooming himself. You also see Buzz in the mirror right before Jim and him play "chicken run". I also think that Buzz is conceited because he always expects his gang to be there for him and always back him up, or do whatever he says. I think that they both think that everybody likes them. I also think that the book and the film are alike because both of the characters move around a lot. Like for example Holden goes from school to school and Jim goes from town to town. I also think that this book and the film are different in some ways. In the film Jim gets in trouble for totally different reasons than Holden does. For example Holden gets in trouble for school reasons and Jim gets in trouble for physical contact issues. I also think that the book is different from the film because Holden doesn’t care about the things that he does wrong and Jim does. For instance when Buzz dies, Jim wants to go tell the police and when Holden leaves the foils on the train he just says I don't care.

I think that this film helps us relate to the book because they are both about the same kind of rebellious teen who have almost the same kind of life. I think that we can relate the character in the film to the ones in the book.

Two similarities between Rebel Without A Cause and Catcher In the Rye are Jim runs away and Holden plans to leave early from school, and the main character's enemy is/has dated his crush. Two differences are that there is no Plato so far in the book, no one that looks up to Holden, and that Holden isn't upset with his parents like Jim is. The movie can help us students understand the book because the movie has visuals that will help us get to know the time setting for the book, and how things looked.

The characters in the movie are very similar to the characters in catcher in the rye. The most obvious ones are that Jim is Holden, and Buzz is Da Stradmeister. There are some more subtle ones too. For example, I think that ray shares some characteristics with Mr. Spencer. They both hate to see jim/Holden waste his life not trying/getting into trouble, so they try to put him on the right path. However Ray was much nicer and more understanding about it.
Buzz is like Stradlater because they are both the top dogs. Buzz is more thuggish though, while Stradlater is just phony.
Jim and Holden are alike, because niether of them has a real home. Jim doens't like his home and Holden hates pencey. Both of them are always moving.

I think the film helps us to understand the book, because sometimes it is earsier to understand the same themes when they are displayed on a tv screen

Catcher in the Rye and Rebel Without a Cause have several similarities. The most obvious being that that the two main characters are both trying to find themselves and are both getting into quite a bit of trouble. Also both characters make several moves in their lives, Holden from school to school and Jim from place to place. Both characters are not afraid of consequences very much either. However personality wise they are different, Holden lies to avoid things, and Jim embraces them by telling the truth.
In the movie Jim gets the girl, in Holden's case there is no girl. Rebel Without a Cause shows how Jim relates to other people, and Holden we already know does not do that very well.
The movie helps us understand how someone who does not fit in and learns to cope with their problems and start a new life. Which in the book Holden is about to do seeing as he won’t be going back to Pencey anytime soon.

Well one similarity between Catcher in the Rye and Rebel without a cause is that they both seem to be about misunderstood boys. Holden and Jim both seem to have this. Another similarity is that they are both rebels Jim is rebelling against his parent’s values and Holden is rebelling against the school system. A difference between the book and the movie is that in the school Jim goes to there seems to be more gangs and violence than in Holden’s school or at least in his point of view. Another difference is that Jim got the girl he loves while Holden watched his friend take her. This film helps us understand the book mainly because it was set in the 50's, the same time period as the book. This will help us understand what everything was like and looked like during that time period. Another way watching the movie will help us understand the book is the way parents treated teenagers. As we saw with Jim’s parents and Judy’s parents we will have an idea of what Holden's parents will do.

Two similarities between the book and the movie, both main characters don't like phonies and they are both from wealthy families, but they don't live up to the family expectations. For example, Holden doesn't do as well in school as his brothers and his sisters. Jim's behavior sets him apart. Both of them are uncomfortable in the world in which they live and they fight against it.

The differences are as follows. Holden has a lot more freedom. Jim is trapped by his parents. Jim is an only child. Holden compares himself to his brothers and sister.

The movie helps us see what the 1950s were like and shows us what cars were like and what clothes they wore.

The charactars in the storied we have gone over are alike, but also very different. In Rebel Without a Cause,Jim is a troubled adolescent who doesn't seem to think much of others, but in some cases he really does. This is what makes him a rebel. He doesn't care what he is doing, but when something important to him comes up, he is very serious and straight to the point. Holden is has that quality, too. As we read, he doesn't really enjoy Stradlater or Ackley, but his softer side is shown when he talks about Jane and Allie. The two protagonists also have to move around and "start over;in Rebel without a Cause, jim has to move around because he can be pretty violent. Holden has to change schools because he doesnt try with anything.
Jim and Holden are different, too. Holden hates school, and sees it as a waste of time, (why he got kicked out of school three times), while jim doesnt really mind school. In Rebel Without a Cause, parents play a big part. They are keeping Jim from doing some really bad things. Holden, at least so far, barely interacts with his parenrts.
The movie helps/helped us visualized the time period the book was in, and gave you a better idea of 50's adolescence.
