After reading th first scene of Rome and Juliet it seems like this story will be both exciting but also confusing and hard to understand. It seems exciting because it seems like the story has a lot of action and is very intense. It seems that the story will be confusing and hard to read and understand because it was written so long ago and the dialogue is not what it is like in books today. It also seems that it will be hard to keep up with the characters and who is talking when because there are so many of them.
I think Romeo and Juliet will be about sadness and love. There will be a main theme of love and romance, and yet there will be another main theme of sadness, death, and, well, tragedy. It will also be very hard to read, especially because Shakespeare makes up a lot of words, and there are words that existed in Shakespears day but not today.
To me, Romeo and Juliet is very confuseing. I think that it was not ment to be a book. In books, actions are described. In plays they are shown. This means that a written play does not have action. All it is is speaking. Which can be very boring. Romeo and Juliet is so confuseing, I can't tell what is going on. Also all of the shakesbearian english helps confuse me.
Romeo and juliet so far is very interesting. I think i would be lost with out the translator thing on the left page it helps a lot. Im begining to hate the word "thou". but so far the book is pretty good and interesting and i hope it stays that way
Romeo seems very disturbed. He must really love Juliet to be that enclosed like that thinking of Juliet. I wonder why he doesn't tell his cousin and friends about Juliet. Wouldn't it be easier just to getit done sooner rather than later? Even if the two families hate each other, if they start to sort it out now then they will have more time to settle it.
Romeo and juliet is a very chalenging book.It has a lot of tough words. there are many things i want explained during class because the left side does not explain a lot of it.
My first impression of Romeo and Juliet was a very good one. I have read a Shakespere play before so I understand the langusge. I loved how you got a feel of the love and the hatered between the two families. I really like how the play started with action. It started off really well. I think that I want to read a lot of the book soon. I LOVE IT!
This book starts out clearly and the more I read it gets harder. A lot of the poetry I do not understand. I hope we will discuss it in class tomorrow.
I think that Romeo and Juliet is very hard to understand. One of the first impressions when I began to read was, how confusing it was. I found the language hard to comprehend. Sometimes, I felt that it was hard to tell which "side" (meaning if they supported Romeo or Juliet) they were on. It is really difficult to read, and I found myself totally lost at some points, and I was not sure what was going on.
Romeo and juliet seems like it will be an immense book. Each page seems like it should be interpreted, and just reading a page and going to the next one doesn't seem right. It appears to be a very long book, in that each page may take a long time to understand. In class, im sure there will be plenty on translation issues that will have to be fixed, but it would be interesting to get better at this language.
I liked act 1 scene 1. I t was very interesting about how they spoke. It was a little bit confusing in the first page.
My first impressions were mixed. I mean, it was a little confusing but all in all pretty good. I look forward to reading the rest of it an maybe then it'll help me understand it a little better.
It was good, but it took about three pages to realize that there was some kind of fight between the two families. The book we are reading in french is easier to understand than this. It seems like an ok story so far.
This reading left me a word quest. First, I looked up pernicious, which gave me the following pointless definition "Causing insidious harm or ruin, ruinous, injurious, and hateful." Then I looked up indsidious, which gave me another pointless definition "Intended to entrap of beguile". Then I had to look up beguile, and got "To influence with trickery, flattery."
@Taylor- Many plays, like Goethe's Faust, are closet plays, or plays that are meant to be read rather than preformed.
@Everyone who said it was difficult to read- Remember, this was written in a time where language wasn't as updated as it is now. Its not like a, say, Hawthorne novel, where the author purposefully loads the pages with awful, boring prose and obsolete, silly vocabulary.
Shakespeare is enjoyable, yet confusing in some parts. Being the first Shakespeare play that I have read (I have only seen them on stage), Romeo and Juliet is different than any other book I have read. Seeing Shakespeare performed is an easier way to follow the story than to read it, because you can not only hear the confusing old english, but see what's happeneing exactly. I like Romeo and Juliet so far, and it seems that there will be more tragedy than two lovers dying...
Reading Romeo and Juliet was very nice and enjoyable for me. On the other hand, it is very very very very confusing in some parts. Sometimes I didn't even understand what they were saying. The definitions on the left side helped me a ton! I think that there will be a lot of romance and tragedy/fighting in Romeo and Juliet.
So far I believe from reading Scene 1 that we can expect a lot involving action and love. I already like Romeo because he knows a lot about himself, what he wants, and his problems. I agree with everyone else that the tongue in hard to handle but I figure after more exposure it will come with ease. The comparisons and contrasts between the two house holds will be interesting to point out, and from this I hope to learn more about the time period and language. So far I like the book quite a bit.
So far Romeo and juliet was very interesting. Although it was really hard to understand at times it still was very enjoyable. The language all the people are using is extremely confusing but I still find the book somewhat enjoyable.
My first impression of Romeo & Juliet was very strange. It was hard to read in old time english. On the other hand I liked how Romeo described the woman he loved.
It was really hard to understand. I had some problems with CIR in the beginning too, but this is way harder. But I understand whats it's about, and I think it'äs a OK book.
Rome and juilet seems like a play to entertain. I havnt seen anything that makes it the classic it is hailed to be. My first impression is wittled own by the obvious sexual puns that shakespear makes. Romeo and Juilet has yet to show me why it is hailed as a masterpiece....
I was surprized when I started reading the book "Romeo and Juliet." It was hard to understand and as soon as you thought you knew something thre was a clue. For instance I was reading and thought that when it said "biting my thumb" meant they were scared. Laster, while reading over the translation to make sure i was right, I noticed that biting your thmb was a asing of disrespect. I would never have known this by reading alone.
