a) Why does Holden "almost wish [he] were dead"?
b) Why do presents make Holden sad? In particular, why do the ice skates make him sad?

Reading Response #3

In chapters 5 and 6, Holden continues to tell us about his life and his experiences, and we continue to get to know him. What important information does Holden give us in these two chapters?

1) Choose one thing from chapter 5 or 6 (a moment in the story, a piece of information, or a quote) that you feel is important to our understanding of Holden and to his character.

2) In paragraph, explain what this "one thing" tells us about Holden AND explain WHY it's important to our understanding of Holden and to his character. Your entry should be at least one paragraph (5 sentences).

Reading Response #2

1) What do you think the red hunting hat means to Holden? As clues, think about when he buys it (right after he leaves the foils on the train) and when he chooses to wear it. Use the details from the story to back up your answer.

2) Why do you think Holden never goes downstairs to say hello to Jane? Use details from the story to back up your answer.

Journal Question:

Would you prefer to be a guardian angel or have a guardian angel? Be sure to explain your answer fully. In your answer, I want you to address the following questions:
1. In your opinion, what is a guardian angel?
2. Why did you choose the answer you made?
3. Do you feel it is important to learn from your own mistakes? Should people make mistakes or would it be best not to make mistakes, if they can be prevented?
